Map Shows States Expecting Stormy Weather Over Labor Day

Several states are at risk of stormy weather this week, which could interrupt Labor Day plans for those in the affected areas.
Forecasts by the National Weather Service (NWS) and a map created by AccuWeather show that states most at risk for a stormy weekend include those on the Gulf Coast, as well as parts of the Northeast.
NWS meteorologists have forecast up to 7 inches of rain in parts of Texas and Louisiana this weekend. At the same time, a cold front is approaching portions of the Midwest and Northeast, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Scott Homan told Newsweek. Stormy weather is forecast over many Southern states and part of the Rocky Mountains as well.
The most severe rains will likely occur in the Gulf Coast states. On Friday, the NWS West Gulf River Forecast Center posted a rainfall map showing that parts of Texas were expecting up to 7 inches of rain this weekend. Several inches of rain are forecast to hit Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.
The rain forecast comes as meteorologists issued a flash flood warning and other rain-related weather alerts in the New Orleans area on Friday morning because of a slow-moving thunderstorm.
The AccuWeather map shows that the thunderstorm threat spreads across much of the South and up to the East Coast.
The risk of downpours is also in place in New York and Pennsylvania, Homan said, as well as in portions of West Virginia. Stormy weather also is forecast for North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. The East Coast can expect thunderstorms to exit the area by Sunday. Parts of Florida could see a rain threat, according to the NWS office in Tampa Bay.
“Here’s your forecast for the upcoming long holiday weekend,” NWS Tampa Bay posted on X with a graphic. “Most of the area will see a good chance of showers and storms each afternoon between 2-6 pm.”
The NWS office in Flagstaff, Arizona, said that monsoonal moisture could threaten Labor Day plans.
“Monsoon moisture across northern AZ will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms Sat and Sun,” the office posted on X. “Conditions dry out on Monday, reducing storm activity. Otherwise, expect near-normal temps and light winds, except near storms.”
Other states are expecting dry and temperate weather over the holiday weekend. Homan said dry weather will mostly be experienced across the Midwest and Ohio Valley, with cool, comfortable temperatures following the cold front and remaining through part of next week. The dip in temperatures comes after above-average heat broke several daily record highs across the Midwest this week, including in Chicago.
Hotter temperatures can be expected this weekend over the Upper Plains and into Montana, Homan said. California and the Southwest can expect dry weather, and temperatures on the West Coast are forecast to increase to around 8 to 10 degrees above average next week.
